Subject: Re: Bomb truck shorts colourways

Ohh, bit of a delay there. Ladies and gentlemen, here is the verdict of the Wellington jury.

They are smashing. They’ve been out on four rides now and washed them a couple of times. Really comfy and an improvement on even the old shorts. I like the slightly looser leg at the bottom and the length is perfect for me. The merino works well. I was a little dubious about how stiff the ballistic nylon panels are, but didn’t notice them while riding. I know from my old courier bag that this stuff softens up well anyway. Pockets good, fit good, side adjusters simple and the elastic bits keep them up without being too tight. The four poppers give me plenty of adjustment. A couple of the rides were full bush bashing in the rain (including climbing a 6m cliff and rope), so I wondered how the merino would stand up to being tugged by bush lawyer and snagged on rocks. All good so far. If I could alter anything, I’d say I prefer the double button closure of the older shorts - it tends to spread the load around and the single popper does seem to dig in a little (particularly as all shorts I have tend to slip down at the back a bit while riding). A double popper would fix it I think, but I had no problems with the buttons. Otherwise, nothing else. No side pockets, which I don’t miss (the pockets on my old ones are now sewn into the seat!) and knowing now that the accent colour is inside the pocket and waist I might have gone for something a bit brighter (I thought it was on the outside). But that is neither here nor there. And I know that the more I ride and wash them, the softer and better they get.

When my old shorts finally die, or I tire of the Ground effect ones I have that are too short and not cut right for me, I’ll be ordering more. And more bibs too, which are the best I’ve got.

Worth waiting for, eh!

Ha! Save me three pairs of Bomb Truck shorts in large!

The hole on the seat of my second pair of 4.3′s has gone (which were the last pair available, sourced from from the UK store) - I reckon I have mere weeks of use left. And they have already been patched (the pockets make great patches!). The last pair self-destructed on the trails - I looked like the incredible hulk, only less green.

Still the finest riding shorts ever.

Three pairs will replace all my other riding shorts thanks!

Hi Gerard,

and yes, all came in today (Sat, 27th). Everything absolutely fine. All looking great, fitting well. The Trad Jersey is snug, but not too tight. The Basics are just great.

Will be back by autumn for the Mids.

Our roots in mountain biking are still strong and quite often people comment on our kit when used on the bike. Mountain bikers are hard on their kit, so when you hear something good from them, it has a hefty weighting. These comments were found here.

Tomness: “I have been buying lab gear stuff for ages and really rate it. The knicks last for ages, and are super compfy and have very nifty pockets in the sides for gels. The merino jersey, tights, legwarmers and arm warmers that I have are great. Nice thin material, but really keep the cold out. I use my labgear merino stuff for when it is cold / wet and I can do a whole ride without needing to shed the tights (ie you don’t over heat). I used my tights this morning when it was chilly in perth. They are still going strong and not stinky at all. A couple of holes, but that is my fault for crashing on my mtb bike and ripping them.

I also have some non merino wicking fabric jerseys and base layers that I got years ago and use on a daily basis. They are also going strong although some of them are getting a little stinky. It seems you can’t get these any more though.”

-

Drubie: “I have the “old” lab-gear arm and leg warmers - going on their fourth winter now I think. Her indoors had to stitch them up this Autumn but I’m still wearing them. Very, very effective gear in cold weather, stays warm when wet like merino items should, not itchy.”

-

Nicobec:”My most worn jersey in a old lab-gear merino in khaki and charcoal and it has survived the abuse over the past three years and still looks good. Seriously you can not go past a merino jersey for regular riding wear. I have a few other items from lab-gear as well and can not fault the quality or durability. I also purchased them on the recommendation of tomness. Hi Tom.

Their new range is more urban than their older clothing and custom built to your order. I have a pair of their Simples shorts and Bi-Posto Bike Boxer undershorts.

I ordered it when their new site went live, however it took two months instead of two weeks. Gerard the person behind Lab-gear kept in contact ever couple of weeks during this time. I understand all the issues have been resolved and delay like mine are highly unlikely to occur again.

The Simples shorts, my biggest surprise was the construction of the shorts, just like regular shorts/jeans/trousers that meet you know where and that come in direct contact with the saddle (unlike some other cycling outer shorts I own, which has a single piece of material and no seams in contact with the saddle).

I have only put 100km riding in them so far, and no riders longer than 45km, but when combined with bi-postos, no issues. Look and feel durable, and capable of surviving the abuse. As well as you will never bump into anybody with the same shorts as you.

The bi postos are a pleasant surprise, very comfortable, do not retain that sweaty smell like my other undershorts. The chamois extends further forward than needed for riding, but I suppose that is for the “manly” look.”

“I purchased 2 pairs of XL Lab gear knicks. Delivered quickly and on-line purchasing was effortless.

I’ve put in about 200 k on them this week. They are comfortable, do not snag (unlike the knicks they replaced), seem particularily well stitched together, and the lycra feels nice. I give them five smilies.”

From the Dirt Rag reader forums (do a search for ‘Lab-Gear’):

“So I got my second order from lab-gear.com.

My first order was a pair of rocket power parts GTO gloves, mainly cuz I couldn’t find them anywhere else, well, they sent me a free winter cap with that order, and since then, I’ve become obsessed with them. This past Thursday night, I was cruising their web page, and noticed they were having a sale, and jumped on the chance to order their gilet vest, their knicks shorts, and merino wool leg warmers. All for a very decent price i might add.

Well, they said it would take 10-14 business days to get the shipment to my home in Mil. Wi, USA. Well, i got that shipment today, only four business days later. I did regular shipping, I just couldn’t believe the package arrived today. I never get that speedy of shipping from anyone like Performance, Nashar, or the rest of them, and they are in the USA!!

Well, I really only got to try out the shorts, cuz it’s still too warm for the vest and warmers, but they were amazing. I normally use Voler shorts, and love them, but it was such a welcomed change. The lighter material, the lack of rubber leg grippers. I’m just wondering why American companies aren’t as quick, and responsive when ordering.

My package came with a hand wrote letter thanking me for my business, and wishing me a pleasurable ride. I guess the Aussies just got it right. I highly recommend checkin’ them out, they are even advertised in this magazine we all love… DIRT RAG”

Hi Gerard,

just wanted to let you know how cool your stuff was, like literally, Cool.

I went in an off-road tri on the weekend and wore my 2.1 Jersey which was great. It was cool enough that I didn’t even need to un-zip during the race. As you can see by the picture attached my team mate wondered why she didn’t get one to race in… ;P

It should be captioned- “ew, Im so sweaty in this inferior product- Micky- how do you stay so cool and dry?”

Remember Thursday 3rd November- (Yesterday) well when we rode home it was 27 degrees and humid, at 5.30 in the afternoon. I was wearing my merino singlet- 1.1 Doppio base on the bike. Funny though- it was really hot and humid but I didn’t have those sweaty patches on my back, armpits or between er, other feminine anatomy. I guess it goes to show that lightweight wool is light and dry and that help to keep you cool, as well as warm. just as well because about half way home the heavens opened and within a few moments I was saturated. Nice, and good for my bike too. I remember my old school socks, they were wool and when they got wet, man: there isn’t anything worse to wear than itchy wet wool. This merino isn’t itchy when its wet- it feels pretty good, even when hot, sweating, wet, slimy, tired, cranky and getting covered in one’s partner’s debris from riding thier bike through puddles. A highly recommended product, for hot days on its own, or cold days as a base.

What a winner!

Hope all is well.

Hey guys,

I recently bought a pair of 4.1’s, some 3.1’s and 3.2’s.

Firstly, I was impressed with how quickly I got the gear, I ordered on a Thursday and had them the following Tuesday - awesome service. Secondly, the gear worked a treat. I wore them on last weekend’s ride (190km of road riding) which saw 90km being clocked up on the Saturday with rain and headwinds most of the way. Even though I got wet, the leg warmers dried out in no time with body heat and kept me turning over the cranks. And the knicks worked incredilbly well too, it was like have a gel seat for a saddle and they allowed me to get back on the bike on Sunday morning and face another 100km+. I had also gotten a pair for one of my mates who did the same ride and he was similarly impressed.

Great job on the gear guys - keep up the good work. I will definitely (and already have) be recommending your stuff to anyone who is looking to buy great value and functional gear. And I will definitely be back for my next pair of knicks.

Thanks again,

Hi,

I have been meaning to write this email for ages. We went on the Great Tasmanian bike ride in February and bought knicks, arm & leg warmers and two of your rain jackets. It was a great test as it was cold and raining and we had some very long days.

So some feedback: The knicks were great. The chamois and durability of the lycra have been heaps better than my Cannibal and Netti knicks. (The chamois is comparable to the Credit Agricole gear at a fraction of the price). The women’s ‘long’ knicks that you kindly supplied were great. I really loved them and having long nicks (although not fashion statements as you pointed out) were really functional and kept me warm.

The jacket that you didn’t have on your site but supplied was also great. It didn’t leak at all. I did spray it with the Colorado protective spray you suggested. It breathed well and kept us dry and warm. The only comment I would have is that for road use a brightly coloured one would have been better. But certainly I would put it back up on your site as I thought it was a great product! I have told all my friends about your gear and site and will certainly be coming back for me.

Thanks for all your help and advice in getting ready for that ride.

Kind regards,

Hey Gerard!

Mate, I just wanted to give you some long term feedback on my 4.3 shorts that I got from you at your place on the day of the Urban Polaris last October. So, It has been a full summer season of mtb and semi-regular commuting from Manly to Glebe and I have to say without a doubt in the 15 years of cycling both on road and off these are the BEST shorts ever to grace my stinky arse! …I really love these shorts they are tops the way they are, by far the best out there.

Oh I wanted to say that i think a lot of the excellence comes from the stretch panels, they give a fit that is outstanding. And the mesh panels are soooo awesome when things get hot– so breezy in summer- i love just wearing them walking around.

On Friday the base layer arrived with a note apologising again and hoping the gift was enjoyed by my Dad. They also bunged a little freebie in. The timescales were completely within my expectations for any time of year, let alone in the build up to Christmas but the attention to detail and personal service gave me a warm glow inside.

Lab Gear stuff rocks!!!! I picked up some merino arm warmers last friday and gave them a work out in the Sydney 24 hour… they surprised me!!! I was a bit sceptical, but they kept me warm, then when they got too warm my arms started to sweat and they cooled down again, just like they are supposed to. Subject: Merino Arm and Leg Warmers

Scott,

Thanks for the great products and prompt service! I was indeed so impressed with the arm-warmers I ordered the leg warmers straight away!

I was interested in both but was just using the arm warmers to ‘test the water’ so to speak. Once they arrived I wish I’d just dived straight in and saved on the postage. I really have a thing for Merino Wool Outdoor clothing at the moment and was impressed to find some arm and leg warmers at such reasonable prices. I’m hoping to not use them much over the next few months, but they look and feel like they will be grest when I do need them.

So for now they will be taking up a very little space in my hydration pack. (far less than just my old lycra leg warmers infact!) I’ll look forward to hearing about more new products (particularly Merino Wool!) as they arrive/are added to the range! Thanks again for a great product and service.

They are the best value knicks I’ve ever owned. ‘Brand X’l now sell in shops for $99 for their base knicks and $159 for their ‘bullet-proof’. It’s customer service like this that will ensure that I’ll buy from the Lab-Gear crew again. Hey Gerard,

Raced on the weekend in some very ordinary weather in Canberra. Wet, cold, windy and muddy (ankle deep in parts on Stromlo). Phase 4 didn’t miss a beat though and was great. It kept me just warm enough - a wind-proof vest would’ve helped me to keep the temperature the way I like - but with the weather the way it was I have no complaints. Overall a great piece of kit. Got a lot of comments on how stylee it was too…

Subject: The Phase 4

Gerard,

I’ve got two Phase IV’s, and that is all I’ve been wearing for about four months now. Well, knicks and Dax and socks too, but you know what I mean. I used them at both the 12 hour and 24 hour races this year and between laps they dried off super quick. Putting a wet jersey on to go out for a lap is the pits, but that didn’t happen to me this year. Viva! I love the full length zip, it helps keep the temperature down on long climbs and the full length sleeves are perfect for mountain biking in amongst the trees and branches. I’ve fallen a couple of times and no marks on the tops so far. Now I’m just waiting for a short sleeve version.

Good to hear from you Gerard,

I had been thinking about dropping you a line. You were right about Polartec blowing Intercool out of the water, it’s simply a great fabric. After wearing the Locals, ‘xx’ gear feels like old potato-sacks by comparison - coarse and prone to stink. On first inspection I felt the zips were a bit short and chunky and that you may as well have just gone with a V-neck. I think a slightly lighter weight zip would be an improvement. But that small criticism aside, I like the design of the Locals very much. They are by far the most comfortable jerseys in my wardrobe - even on the hottest ride they have an uncanny ability to remain totally inconspicuous against the skin, it’s the next best thing to riding naked! As soon as my “Skase Account” is healthy again I’ll be putting in another order for sure.

I appreciate the follow-up Gerard.

All the best for 2003!

The Local is awesome. I absolutely love it!!!! I haven’t worn my other ‘xx’ jersey since. Its a great fit an I could actually do with another one. How about you make one in blue.

And Lab-Gear is worn by famous people too!

Our man on the ground in the UK let us know what Joe Burt (of Mint Sauce fame, as if you had to ask!!) thinks about his Stubbie:

Jo likes his gear. In fact, he simply adores the Stubbie. But not as much as his cat. Within an hour of laying the garment down on his bed whilst he went to do some more scribbling, aforementioned moggy was curled up on it… thus prompting a response from Herr Burt, and perhaps, a new company slogan: “Lab-Gear clothing - pussy magnet” UK —-

Hey-ho,

…Ordering/delivery was top notch, 4 days to my door from the other side of the globe is still kinda unbelievable. Good value for good quality clobber (is that the correct lingo, or just patronising ; ) ). Wore the wool top for a full week of commuting (140m/220k) in one of the worst 5 days of weather I think Scotland has suffered in a while. On the Tuesday it rained so hard that motorways and main railway links were closed and I was knee deep in water at one stage. Hoots mon! Biblical downpours they were.

Anyhoo, although I was soaked to the skin, I was still pleasantly warm in the wool top - reckon in a “technical” fabric I would have felt pretty chilled by the time I got back to the house. Guess sheep aren’t that stupid after all. Next few weeks sees my 2nd 24 hour race of the season (going for an outfit slightly more practical than those in the attached phoaties, which the team wore at the last one) and like I said, autumn is nearly here (wtf happened to summer) so should be giving the top a run out. Will be putting some more custom your way later on in the year.

Hi Gerard,

I just wanted to let you know that I’ve been really impressed with the riding shirts that I brought from you a while ago. I took them to Canada with me as my only riding gear for three weeks and they worked a treat, they didn’t lose shape or fade despite my numerous crashes and washing them in rivers. The cut is spot on too, not skin tight like lycra but then not as baggy as a downhill jersey, just right. Here’s some piccies from the trip as well, awesome riding.

Hello Gerard,

Here are some thoughts:

* I was really impressed with the e-comm front end on the website. Nice and simple. Clearly the back end works well as the order confirmation and dispatch was fast and accurate. Real fast delivery as we had the gear the next day and paraded it about town the day after. Excellent work compared to many. I’m still waiting on a new cycle computer I purchased over the net (from within the same city) three weeks ago (actually I’ve given up waiting for the goods and am looking for a refund).

* The Lab-Gear looks great! Good design and construction with quality fabrics. Nice design touches that suggest you are attuned to the needs of riders. The Phase 3 and the local we purchased have performed well so far under testing Queensland conditions (hot lately).

* I’m trying to convice my team mates that lab-gear should be the ‘jersey of choice’ for an upcoming 6hr. We’ll see.

Regards,

Sean and Gehann, Australia
