Completely amazing, despite the fact that these ’scientists’ managed to kill the entire colony to satisfy thier curiosity [thanks Velofello] Kim JoonWednesday, November 26th, 2008This is some really amazing work by Korean artist Kim Joon. Well worth checking out, so visit [his site] for more. [spotted here first] Darren HostetterMonday, November 10th, 2008“My paintings depict technological weaponry and military aerospace objects that are set in whimsical and alluring patterns. My pieces pit many contradictory elements against one another: drab machinery against bold color schemes inspired from commercial and lingerie design; order versus chaos; the natural world in opposition to the man-made. Although I’m working to make the symbols of the horrific power that we possess beautiful and seductive, I’m also pointing out that such powerful symbols are a reflection of our arrogance and ignorance” Really interesting work. Abstract and yet not. Check out Darren Hostetter’s work [here] and at his own site [here] Sculpture By The Sea 2008Monday, October 27th, 2008It’s that time of the year again, and Sydney’s famous Bronte to Bondi ocean walk hosts the ‘Sculpture By The Sea’. 8am Sunday and it was already packed but here are what we thought were some of the highlights of this year’s show… Hayashi ShigekiWednesday, October 22nd, 2008Urban toys are cool, we said so here. Hayashi Shigeki’s work though take the urban toy idea and transports it to a whole other place. To quote the gallery’s profile: “Hayashi Shigeki, from Tajimi City, draws inspiration for his ceramic figures from images from science fiction, animated film and Japanese comic books known as manga, all of which have attracted him since he was a child. He comes from a region of Japan famous for the production of porcelain domestic ware, and he says “In order to express my ideas as art, I have found that porcelain is the best medium. However, I do not think of my works as ceramic pieces.” His haunting figures, like this “QP” doll in a space suit, suggest a deeper, hidden narrative within this universally recognizable variation on the traditional Kewpie doll from the west. In 2007 this received the important Medal of the President of the Chamber of Deputies at the Faenza International Competition for Contemporary Ceramics in Italy.” [via] VaderloonThursday, September 11th, 2008Use the Hot Air Luke…. [strangevehicles.com] Funny, yet cruel… yet so funny…Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008[Sexy People] Chris GlimourThursday, August 28th, 2008Mr Gilmour’s work has been doing the rounds ont he interwebby of late but it was only just today that we looked up his work. What this man can do with cardboard, yes, you read right, is simply amazing. Well worth having a look at his life size recreations. [Chris Gilmour] Flies!Tuesday, August 26th, 2008And to continue with the arty theme, Flies 365 is a blog site by artist Jeff (trout bum) where he documents his drawings of fishing flies - he’s working on one a day. It’s an interesting journey where you can watch someone test their imagination and creativity every day for no other reason than to just do it. Some really nice work there too! [check it out] Sculpture from found objectsTuesday, August 26th, 2008Here’s a bit of fun. Chris Goodwin has made a collection of insect sculptures from objects he found. Pretty damn clever if you ask us. [see more here] |
