:So now you’re riding baby

Cue Christopher Cross.

Riding like the wind. That’s what I’m doing. Well, not quite but a lot more than I have in quite literally years. Enough that when I ‘miss’ a day, I get annoyed, and that I clearly know when I have made one of those step ups… you know the ones you make before the plateau hits and you have to bash your way to the next stage. The problem though, is what now?

I promised myself I would not get to this point, riding I promised, any type of riding, is enough. But you see, after so many years of turning the cranks, once a certain point gets passed, it’s like one of those Twilight vamps getting a whiff of the good stuff; not that I am saying I look any where near as good, or as sparkly, but I am getting the itch for… more; 5.20am mornings on the road, in the dark and cold could well be an amplifier to this train of thinking.

Now what that ‘more’ is has become a definite conundrum. I like many other people out there, have a life that’s pretty full. A lad, a new one on the way, a business yadda, yadda; time is not something I can spare a lot of, nor is there a lot to spare. Recently I have been wondering if my (generally) 3 days a week is enough, though the enough for what has yet to be decided. So the other day when I was pondering how often to ride, I read forum tales of glory, 6 days a week, seven days a week, 400km+, twice a day. Yes, I am more than suspect of most of them as any coach will tell you you need off time to get stronger, so either these guys think they are a lot faster than they really are, or they are somewhat delusional if they have ‘real’ lives which involve relationships, and they are not riding for a living, or near to one. Regardless, and pending me pulling out the two training ‘bibles’ to do some refreshing on the subject, I have found that my riding has been enough for me to start pondering where to from here?

Get back on the Enduro wagon? We have our own series and select ‘other’ events can be a weekend away for everyone. XC racing? No way in hell. Road racing? Nope. That would involve buying a proper road bike and a fairly dramatic shift in thinking. Start doing those very long ‘death march’ rides? Hard to justify that much time away from home on the weekends. So what?

To be honest, right now I am at a complete loss. I need to schedule more time on dirt. That much is a given though that does not require the riding I am currently doing. I am also going to work up a ride based training programme, just because I am curious to see how far a three day a week routine can take one. But beyond that though I have no idea where all this additional riding will lead, and the last thing I want is to end up in a place where it all stops because it seems like a waste of time.

Stay tuned.
