Design Meccanica – ‘Design Process’

In 2005 the idea to change our business model to one based on the way things used to be came to mind. The ability to walk into a shop and order something that was either altered or made just for you seemed to be long gone, but the appeal was stronger than ever in a world where most things are mass produced. As professional designers we wanted to do something more hands-on, allowing us to experiment – something that’s almost impossible when you have to contend with large-scale production.

After much thinking, Design Meccanica (Design ‘Process’) was the result. It’s taken several years to turn the concept from an idea on paper into a weekly reality.

Design Meccanica is a bespoke workshop service where you can order something that reflects your personality, – we make everything to order so can tailor each item we make. We provide the designs, materials and the skills to put it together, you provide the ‘essence of you’. It means you can shape any one of our products to be as plain or as outlandish as you like and make sure it fits you 100%.

It’s about as ‘old school’ as you can get these days but with the new world advantage that it’s all online – you don’t actually have to walk in to a shop but can order from wherever you are in the world.

Italian for ‘mechanics/process’, it’s more than just a word we thought was cool, it’s our system of operation…

Sustainable production: We aim to make only what we sell, only sell what we believe in. Our hands-on approach means we control each step of production, allowing us to make the most of resources and reduce wastage.

Made to order: Offering you the choice to make something truly all yours.

Low petroleum footprint: We prefer using natural, sustainable textiles and try not to use synthetic textiles unless there’s a very good reason.

Our mission: To create kit that people will love, not just ‘own’.

Our inspiration: Modern ideas. Beautiful and practical design. Old world craftsmanship – attention to detail, and the workmanship found in the crafts of countries like Japan, Italy and the United Kingdom… all the things dying out in the cookie-cutter world of today.

Our choice: We make our products in our home town. We are not ‘made in China’. We believe in what we do.
