: New Disc BrakesAfter a quick Sunday night wrench session, I am happy to say that I am testing new disc brakes this week in preparation for specification of 2011 Mountain Cycle platforms.
I have been waiting a month to play with these units and after they arrived in the mail last week, I was just hanging for a spare moment to put them on the bike. Of course it meant taking off the Hopes but to be honest, I have not been thrilled with them since I bought them a year or so ago. But what’s the big deal about yet another set of brakes? Well, these brakes were a last minute find on the last day of the Taiwan Cycle Show. Having decided that there was no love over at SRAM and we were going to go with Shimano, it looked liked Shimano brakes would round things off. Nothing wrong with that and it’s still an option but being the way I am, I like to pick and choose what goes on a bike and was thinking having the brake system separate from the drivetrain would be nice. Unfortunately our second choice, Formula, had an overwhelmingly unimpressive representation at the show, so we could not even make a judgment and with time running out on getting our 2011 platforms from paper to production running out, Shimano was looking more and more likely.
Then, on the 11th hour while on a casual wonder to see the things we missed, we found these brakes. On first look they were very nice so with a bit of luck we arranged an appointment at the last minute to find out more. Long and short of it, while these brakes look nice, they are also bloody smart and work on the simple premise that they are pistonless. That’s right disc brakes without pistons and judging by the amount of OEM interest, we were not the only ones that thought they were smart.
So they’re on the bike now. It won’t take long to assess them, a few rides this week and then some sweet singletack on the weekend. If everything pans out like I expect it will, we’ll be initiating orders next week.
